Hixon House as a Dormitory
In the post-World War II era, housing was in very short supply because so little construction had been done during the Great Depression and the war itself. In 1946, while living in Lake Forest, Alice Green Hixon made the Hixon House available for three school years as a dormitory for female students attending the La Crosse Vocational School (Western Technical College) and the La Crosse State Teachers College (University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.) Many of the family's valuables and personal items were put in storage. Photos from the time show young women quite excited by their living quarters.
